Campbell, Parker Score First Wins While Rain Washes Out B-Mod and Modified Main Events

With rain throughout the day including a steady shower just hours before race time drivers took to a hooked up Salina Highbanks Speedway for the fifth points race of 2017. Heat races were quickly rolled on and off of the speedway and intermission was scrapped due to inclement weather in the area. Despite tremendous efforts to complete the entire program two A-Features fell victim to Mother Nature and will open the regularly scheduled program on June 10th.

The Pure Stocks were the first division to hit the Highbanks for A-Feature action. Twenty-two of the twenty-five drivers took the green flag in the 15-lap affair that went caution-free. It was Susan versus Susan for the first half as Susan Lindell, who led the field to the initial green, and Susan Stand raced side by side for the opening eight circuits. However, by the time the crossed flags were displayed Nathan Campbell had maneuvered his way through traffic to challenge the female duo and eventually take command of the race. Once the Tulsa, Oklahoma racer cleared into the lead he never looked back on his way to his first win of the season. Youngster Colby Kasinger worked his way by Susan Lindell to garner the runner-up finish while Jordan Shive, and twelfth starting Matt Thulin rounded out the top five.

The ultra-competitive, high-horsepower Super Stocks rolled out second in the running order. Not long after the green flag waved Larry Rupe blasted to the lead quickly putting plenty of eastern Oklahoma clay between himself and the rest of the field. Despite the solid lead Rupe built early in the A-Feature Dale Richardson was able to find enough speed to run down the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma veteran. Despite relentless charges just past the midway point of the race Richardson never took the lead before cutting a right rear, ending his night in tenth. Rupe powered back away from the field and looked to have the win sown up until a late race caution woed the field at lap 18. That provided just enough opportunity for the 2012 Grand National Track Champion, Brian Parker to spoil Rupe’s party. Parker stayed hot on the heels of Rupe in the closing laps before driving by the near race-long leader just after seeing the white flag. It was Parker’s first win of the young season. Rupe maintained second, Kyle Slader worked from tenth to finish third with Jeff Metcalf and Daniel “Boone” Johnson filling out the top five. It was a race of attrition as only eight of the seventeen starters took the checkered flag.

While the Pure Stocks and Super Stocks saw first time winners, the victor of the B-Mods and Modifieds was an all-too familiar face as Mother Nature made a late entry to the Highbanks. By lap 3 of the B-Mod A-Feature enough rain was coming down to stop the race and eventually postpone the rest of the show. Saturday, June 10th, the remainder of the B-Mod Feature and the Modified A-Feature will run at the beginning of the regularly scheduled program.
