Salina Highbanks Speedway

Tillison, Jolly double dip; Parker, Lacy also win

It was a busy evening of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series points racing at Salina Highbanks Speedway as nearly 100 cars rolled through the back gates for a great evening of racing. In addition to the regular four-division card, fans also witnessed the completion of last week’s B-Mod A-Feature and Modified A-Feature that previously fell victim to rain.

The Pure Stock division saw a stellar field of thirty drivers check in to do battle on the Highbanks. After four competitive heat races and a B-Feature to set the field, nineteen of the twenty drivers who qualified for the A-Feature took the green flag in an action-packed 15-lapper. When the checkered flag waved it was 11th-starting Brennon Lacy who picked up his third win of the season, denying Nathan Campbell back-to-back wins. Campbell settled for second, Matt Thulin completed a charge from the fifth row to finish third, Benjamin Haddox wound up forth, while Colby Kasinger recorded his third consecutive top five finish.

The Super Stocks raced for extra pay this weekend in the Summertime Shootout presented by Buddy’s Home Furnishings. Brian Parker was the “high point” driver after heat racing action, which put the Owasso, Oklahoma veteran on the pole of the 20-lap, $700 to win A-Feature. Although he wired the field, Parker had to stay elbows up as Dale Richardson stalked Parker the entire distance. Richardson, however, was not able to strike and crossed the line in second ahead of Jeff Metcalf. Kyle Slader worked from 16th on the starting grid to finish fourth earning himself the Out-Pace Racing Products Hard Charger Award. Larry Rupe, who won the Pit Crew Challenge by default, held on for a top five finish.

Saturday’s B-Mod A-Feature showcased a fantastic field of cars that fiercely fought one another for all 20 circuits. Matt Collins blasted out to early command and led the opening fourteen circuits before jumping the cushion allowing prime-positioned Cody Jolly to slip by. That was all Jolly needed to claim his fourth straight B-Mod victory. Chris Hawkins was also able to work by Collins to finish second. A pair of young guns rounded out the top five as Brady Walsh finished fourth and Kenton Allen finished fifth. Later in the night, the B-Mods returned to the speedway to pick up where business left off the previous Saturday. With three laps in the books the field re-fired from the “Delaware Double File” restart and the end result was much of the same. Cody Jolly claimed stake to his fifth consecutive A-Feature win ahead of Shane Collins, Carl Conley, Kevin Guinn, and Justin Shoemaker.

Cody Jolly was not the only driver to pick up two A-Feature wins in one night as Wellston, Oklahoma’s Thomas Tillison, Jr. also achieved the feat. In the night’s regularly scheduled program, Tillison earned a front row starting spot alongside RC Whitwell, who has been white-hot in the highest ranks of Modified racing lately. The duo battled early for control of the race before Tillison ultimately rolled out in front and navigated his way through lapped traffic and a late caution to pick up the win. Whitwell broke on the restart of a lap 17 caution, while his teammate Tyler Wolff raced on to finish second. Chad Wheeler advanced a couple of spots to finish third ahead of Steve Holzkamper, fourth. Tate Cole took the last spot in the top five narrowly holding off hard chargers Al Purkey and Brian Williams who started 19th and 20th respectively. In the makeup event, Tillison made his dominance even more apparent checking out on the field. Al Purkey worked by his teammate, Justin Rexwinkle, to take over second. Although Rexwinkle fell into the clutches of the eventual top five finishers, Purkey did hang on to the runner-up finish. Lobo Racing teammates, Tyler Wolff and RC Whitwell finished third and fourth, and Brett Hansen logged a fifth place finish.

Up next is K&N Night plus the B-Mod Summertime Shootout presented by ARMI Contractors on Saturday, June 17th. Racing will begin at 7PM. Regular general admission pricing will apply.
