Lacy sizzles in Summertime Shootout; Whitwell, Jolly, Parker also win

It was a sultry evening for fans and teams as NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing returned to the Highbanks after a rainout the previous weekend. With nearly ninety cars jammed into the pits and a loaded racing card, fans were treated to a fantastic show.

After heats, a Pure Stock B-Feature, and an intermission break the Super Stocks opened the second half of the program with their 20 lap A-Feature. Outside polesitter, Andy Davis jumped out to the lead taking early command of the field. But, with just six laps completed the Bartlesville, Oklahoma racer had to deal with lapped traffic. Entering turn one Davis hesitated just enough racing by a lapped car for Brian Parker to take the lead. The next lap in turn one, Parker had to navigate a similar situation but never faltered racing on to his third feature win of the season. Second row starter Nick Artherton finished in second just ahead of Jason Wayne, while Davis maintained a forth place finish. Danny Womack debuted a new canary yellow rocket ship and raced his way from twelfth to finish just inside the top five.

From front to back the second A-Feature of the night, the B-Mods, was a display of tremendous racing. Kenton Allen rolled from the outside pole to lead early, as bedlam happened behind him. A few early cautions created a four-car battle that saw three wide action between Dylan Cantwell, Cody Jolly, Matt Collins, and Justin Shoemaker. Cantwell fell out with just four circuits in but the slicing and dicing continued amongst Jolly, Collins, and Shoemaker. By the midway point that action settled with Jolly putting Allen in the crosshairs in a race for the lead. With five laps to go Jolly pulled the trigger, dropping down to the inside of Allen off of turn four to take the lead. With that, Jolly scored his seventh win of the season. Allen registered a solid runner-up finish ahead of Shoemaker who occupied the final podium spot. Jeran Frailey and Collins completed the top five.

For the greater part of the Modified A-Feature Al Purkey rode the cushion with ease just turning laps around the high-banked clay oval until R.C. Whitwell began pressuring the “The Shark” just past the halfway point. By lap fourteen the slide jobs ensued between Whitwell and Purkey. Whitwell sealed the deal with seventeen laps in to pick up a $1,500 payday securing his position at the top of the points in the Inaugural Independence Modified Clash presented by Bravado Wireless worth another $1,000. Whitwell’s triumph was his forth of the season. Purkey held on for second while Steve Holzkamper, Chad Wheeler, and Mitch Keeter made up the rest of the top five.

The final race of the night was the Pure Stock Summertime Shootout presented by Bostick Electric. After drawing in and earning passing points during the heat races Jordan Shive and Justin Walters qualified on the front row of the 20 lap affair. Shortly after those two took the green flag it became obvious who the class of the field was for the evening. Brennon Lacy started fifth on the grid, worked to the lead early and never looked back earning $500 for his fifth victory of the season. Brett Testerman advanced five positions to finish second, as Walters, JP Harris, and Shive finished third, forth, and fifth, respectively. Additional honors went to Testerman and crew who won the Pit Crew Challenge, Brandon Leland passed seven cars in the A-Feature to win the Hard Charger Award sponsored by Out-Pace Racing Products, and Tommy Cantwell won $250 in the “Lucky Non-Qualifier” draw.
