‘Branchcomb Blitz’ too much in Inaugural Mayes County Coaches’ Cup

Not long after kickoff of the Inaugural Mayes County Coaches’ Cup it became clear Pryor Head Football Coach Jeramy Branchcomb would be the driver to beat. Piloting a fellow Tiger’s former racecar (Zach Cowan’s #10 Pure Stock), Branchcomb wired the field in the first ever 10-lap grudge race that will be a topic of conversation for weeks to come.

Adair Head Football Coach Rob Gilstrap and Locust Grove Head Football Coach Matt Hennesy led the field to the initial drop of the green flag with Branchcomb and Salina Head Football Coach Matt Williams on the second row, while Chouteau’s Head Girls Basketball Coach Adam Klucevsek brought up the tail of the field.

When the green flag waved the drag race to the opening set of corners ensued and bedlam soon broke out on the back straightaway. Hennesy buzzed the tires off the topside of turn two, looping the car down the backstretch to bring out an opening lap caution. When Hennesy dropped to the tail, Branchcomb assumed the outside front row starting spot on the restart. From that point, Branchcomb set a scalding pace over the field and only a debris caution on lap 7 stood between “Coach B” and his eventual win.

Pole-starting Gilstrap held off Williams in a race for the runner-up spot, as Klucevsek rolled on to a forth-place finish after an exchange with Williams on the lap 7 restart. Hennesy’s opening lap fumble resulted in a flat left rear handing “Coach Heno” a DNF for the event.
