The 6th Annual Allen Frailey Memorial was contested May 12th, 2018 at Salina Highbanks Speedway and by all accounts the event was a resounding success. Eighty-four drivers checked in to compete for the coveted Allen Frailey Memorial trophies and the event saw its first winner in the new “Uncle Bumper All-Star Invitational Dash.”

The S&J Plumbing Pure Stock A-Main was the first Feature of the evening and two drivers quickly established themselves as the class of the field. JD Jackson and Nathan Campbell took advantage of their first and second row starting spots to make the 15-lap A-Main a two-car show. Jackson led the entire Feature, surviving a two-lap shootout to win his first of the season over Campbell. The Shive brother duo, Josh and Jordon, led hard charges from mid-pack to finish third and fourth, respectively, while Roger Starling rounded out the top five.

The AmeriFlex Hose & Accessories B-Mods were second up on the card and as is customary the division put on a great show. The first half of the 20-lapper belonged solely to Paul Cates who enjoyed a full straightaway advantage before a midway point caution not only bunched the field back up, but also saw Cates lose an engine under the yellow. Brady Walsh inherited the lead at that point, but lost it one lap later when a small bobble off of turn four allowed tenth-starting Cody Jolly to assume the lead. That was all Jolly needed to cruise on to his second win of the season. Past two-time Allen Frailey Memorial Winner Justin Shoemaker finished second after starting eighth. Steve Holzkamper made his B-Mod debut and started 12th to finish third. Willie Gammill, another past event winner, finished fourth, while Walsh finished fifth. 18th place finisher, Tye Hollingsworth won the AmeriFlex “Lucky Draw” to take home a $100 bonus.

After the recent loss of a close friend, Skip Moore, and racing in his honor, from the drop of the green flag in the Super Stock A-Main it was undoubtedly Jason Wayne’s night to shine. Although the winningest driver in Super Stock competition, Jeff Metcalf, trailed him the entire distance, Wayne never faltered in picking up his first win since the 2016 season. Metcalf finished in the runner-up spot, Boone Johnson finished third, Jay Arnold drove from tenth to fourth in his first Super Stock start of the season, and Ray Roberts ended up fifth.

The final A-Main of the night was the Modified division and fans were treated to more stellar racing. Kyle Schmidt, the most recent Feature winner, led the first circuit just before defending track champion, Mitch Keeter, took over on the second lap to lead the next dozen. However, by lap fourteen Tyler Wolff’s high side hustle was enough to overtake Keeter for the lead. Once Wolff completed the pass off the topside of turn two he never looked back in claiming his second win of the season. Keeter held on to second and Schmidt crossed the line in third. Johnny Bone, Jr. made his season debut starting eighth and finishing fourth, while Jared Russell logged a top five finish.

The final event of the night was the “Uncle Bumper All-Star Invitational Dash.” Competitors in the AmeriFlex Hose & Accessories B-Mod division partook in a “Revenge Draw” to set the field just before the $1,037 to win, ten-lap dash. Chris Theodore and Justin Shoemaker led the field to the green, but similar to the A-Main earlier that night it would soon be Cody Jolly showing the way around the Highbanks. Once Jolly took the lead, the defending track and national champion dominated the remainder of the dash to pocket the cash and be the first name etched on the “Uncle Bumper All-Star Invitational” trophy to be displayed at the speedway. Shoemaker once again finished second to Jolly, Carl Conley II finished in third, Steve Holzkamper fourth, and Willie Gammill fifth. The remaining running order was; Dylan Cantwell sixth, Brady Walsh seventh, Tate Cole eighth, Brian Williams ninth, and Randi Goins tenth. Theodore did not finish, and other invitees, Jeran Frailey and Jacoby Frailey were unable to start.
