TOMS Modifieds, tight points races to highlight 6th Annual Sooner Showdown
The 6th Annual Sooner Showdown, now one night only but jam-packed with great racing action! The Touring Outlaw Modified Series will headline the program while all other divisions wrap up their NASCAR points season. PLUS double features in the AmeriFlex B-Mods with the makeup race from 9-8.
While two points champions have already been decided, one officially the other unofficially, two divisions remain up in the air heading into the final points race of the season. Mitch Keeter officially took his second consecutive track championship following the 9-8 racing program. Likewise Jason Wayne will celebrate his second track championship following the racing action this Saturday night at the Sooner Showdown. There is simply no mathematical possibility for Wayne to be de-throned in the final points race of the season. Ray Roberts is second in points 29 markers ahead of Charlie Tuggle and positions fourth through sixth could be decided this week as margins between fourth place Will Parker, fifth place Daniel Mullins and sixth place Jeff Metcalf total only 26 points.
The S&J Plumbing Pure Stocks have a very tight points battle coming down to the wire. Nathan Campbell is the leader by a 29-point advantage over Josh Shive, while Josh’s brother Jordon sits 61 points removed from the lead. Although Campbell has not won a previous track championship, he is eyeing a second NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division IV National Championship (the same title he took in 2016). Campbell is fresh off a win and has been exceptionally consistent in the final hunt for the points. However, the elbows up Shive brother duo is well within reach of the leader in only their second full season of racing.
Perhaps the most intense points battle will be in the AmeriFlex B-Mod division as it boasts not only the closest points chase but also has two features remaining, each to be contested on the same night. Justin Shoemaker leads Clint Johnson by 17 points and defending track champion, Cody Jolly by 38 points. The starting grid in the makeup A-Main has Shoemaker and Johnson side by side on the third row with Jolly one row back on the inside. Beyond the top three, Dylan Cantwell sits solidly in fourth but fifth through seventh is hotly contested with just three points separating Randi Goins, Brent Bates and Brady Walsh. Buckle up, as the AmeriFlex B-Mod twin championship features will be nothing short of wild!
While track points racing is over in the featured Modified division the racing will still be fantastic as Salina’s weekly drivers will compete against the Touring Outlaw Modified Series for a $1,500 top prize. The TOMS Modified series regulars include Triston Dycus, Bo Day, Troy Taylor, CA Nix, Charlie Smith and a slew of others, many of which will be seeing Salina Highbanks Speedway for the first time ever.
